Prayers

Open My Eyes
Open my eyes, Lord
To see what you see
The frightened child who has
Nowhere to sleep
Now open my heart Lord
To feel what you feel
When you see your children
Scratching through trash in the hope of a meal.
We loosen our belts
While another child starves
She’s begging for handouts while
I watch from afar
Our mountains of grain
Are eaten by rats
While children are dying
They hold out their hands and I fail to react.
Don’t let me be blind
To the absurdity
Of having too much when my brother’s hungry
Open my eyes
And call me by name
To stand up and fight against such a disgrace.
Open my eyes, Lord
To see what you see
Give me the courage
To become the person you want me to be.
Closing Words
This we know: the earth does not belong to us.
We belong to the earth, our lives should be down to earth.
This we know: all things are connected.
Like the blood that unites one family, our blood runs down to earth.
This we know: we did not weave the web of life.
We are a strand within it, woven down to earth.
Whatever we do with this web
We do it to ourselves.
Let us give thanks for the gift of creation and for our God, who came down to earth.
Let us give thanks that all things hold together in Christ, Christ who came down to earth.
The peace of the earth be with you.
Amen
