31st May 2020 Sunday Worship – Pentecost

St Luke's Church in Hedge End

Welcome

“And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20 v22

The Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, is poured out upon the first disciples at Pentecost. The Spirit of God enables them and enables us to go out and share the good news of Jesus with the whole world in many varied ways. Let’s take it to another level this year!

Glow (from Spring Harvest 2020)

Opening Prayer

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,
ignite in us your holy fire;
strengthen your children with the gift of faith,
revive your Church with the breath of love,
and renew the face of the earth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Holy Spirit you are Welcome Here

Verse 1

There’s nothing worth more that will ever come close
No thing can compare You’re our living hope
Your Presence Lord

Verse 2

I’ve tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free and my shame is undone
Your Presence Lord

Chorus

Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your Presence Lord

Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness (Lord)

Oh Wow! (Awesome God)

Confession

O King enthroned on high,
filling the earth with your glory:
Holy is your name,
Lord God almighty.
In our sinfulness we cry to you
to take our guilt away,
and to cleanse our lips to speak your word
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Absolution

Almighty God,
who in Jesus Christ has given us
a kingdom that cannot be destroyed,
forgive us our sins,
open our eyes to God’s truth,
strengthen us to do God’s will
and give us the joy of his kingdom,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Who or what is the Holy Spirit for you?

With big thanks to Alastair and Toby Dobson, Luiza Antoci, and Sal Robinson for sharing their personal thoughts and words. Let’s think about what we would say if we were asked the same question: “Who is the Holy Spirit for you?”

Testimonials

We also thought it would be lovely to hear a testimony or two from people about their experience of God during lockdown.

Margaret has shared how she has received many messages about God being with us all the time and that he is sharing any pain we feel. She also shared a wonderful answer to prayer – she had what she called an unreasonable fear going into her conservatory where she had a bad fall a while ago. She said it was irrational, why was that fear still there when she was on her own? She couldn’t go in there. Then Rosie Adams rang to check up on her and offered to pray a releasing prayer over the phone. Margaret said she ‘grunted in agreement’ (!). Rosie’s Small Group also prayed. About two days later, Margaret went into her conservatory on her own, and was able to go in there and not feel any fear whatsoever! She has since been reading and knitting in there, and spending time there. How great is God! Let’s give thanks that Margaret has been released from that fear. I am sure there are many ways God has spoken with you and you have met with Him – do keep sharing so we can encourage one another in our faith.

Margaret Reid

I was thinking about our testimony, which isn’t directly related to lockdown which has been relatively painless for us, being retired, child free and plenty to occupy us.  However, we have prayed for some time to get to know neighbours better in our immediate area, not that people are unfriendly, we just never see them.  I suggested a What’sApp group at the beginning of lockdown arising from the neighbourhood watch group which people seemed pleased with and then there was a mini street party on VE day which we felt was a real move forward and answer to prayer.

Rosie Adams

Thank you to those of you who have shared, and let’s thank God for all the ways He speaks to us. As we listen to the next song let’s raise the roof and praise God’s Holy Name that nothing can stop his love or covenanted mastery.

Talk

This is Our God

Verse 1

Your grace is enough
More than I need
At Your word I will believe
I wait for You
Draw near again
Let Your Spirit make me new

Chorus

And I will fall at Your feet
I will fall at Your feet
And I will worship You here

Verse 2

Your presence in me
Jesus light the way
By the power of Your word
I am restored
I am redeemed
By Your Spirit I am free

Bridge

Freely You gave it all for us
Surrendered Your life upon that cross
Great is the love poured out for all
This is our God
Lifted on high from death to life
Forever our God is glorified
Servant and King rescued the world
This is our God

Prayers

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name;
your kingdom come;
your will be done;
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.  Amen.

Thy Kingdom Come Song

Verse 1

Made in perfect love
Innocent we walked as friends of God
Still we turned away
Traded freedom for a life enslaved

Verse 2

Helpless we were lost
Heaven sent the rescue plan of God
Through the love of Christ
We are found and born into new life

Pre-Chorus

We are watching we are waiting
We are hoping we are praying
We’re believing let your kingdom come

Chorus

Father in heaven your name is holy
Yours is the kingdom the pow’r and the glory
God of salvation unfold your story
Yours is the kingdom the pow’r and the glory
(Forever and ever) Amen

Verse 3

King of endless love
Here on earth as in heaven above
Let your will be done
Wake our hearts and let your kingdom come

Pentecost Talk from Archbishop Justin

This Little Light of Mine - St Luke's Ultimate Edition

Chorus

This a little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine,
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine
This a little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine,
Let it shine.

Verse 1

Light that shines is the light of love,
Hides the darkness from above,
Shines on me and it shines on you,
Shows you what the power of love can do.
Shine my light both bright and clear,
Shine my light both far and near
In ev’ry dark corner that I find
Gonna let my little light shine.

Chorus

Verse 2

Monday – He gave me the gift of love,
Tuesday – peace came from above,
Wednesday – He told me to have more faith,
Thursday – He gave me a little more grace.
Friday – He told me to watch and pray,
Saturday – He told me what to say,
Sunday – He gave me the power divine,
to let my little light shine.

Chorus x3

Thank you to all those who helped make this video and the Holcombes who put it all together.

Closing Prayer

May the Spirit of God,
who breathed courage into the hearts of Jesus’ disciples,
fill your lives with hope, vitality, and power
to share the words and works of God.
And may God’s blessing rest upon you,
and those whom you love,
today and always.

Amen.
